There is a severe shortage of surgeons in Sub-Saharan Africa, with only 1 surgeon per 100,000 people. Although women comprise over 50% of the population, they represent just 10% of the surgical workforce.
To help address this gap, the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the Association of Women Surgeons Foundation (AWSF), and COSECSA have partnered to offer a Women in Surgery Scholarship Programme supporting female surgeons in training.
About the Scholarship
The programme is open to senior female surgical trainees preparing to sit the COSECSA Fellowship Examination in 2026. The scholarship supports costs related to:

Fellowship examination and graduation fees

Gown hire and examination travel

Three-year COSECSA membership

One-year ACS Associate Membership
Financial Support

Ten (10) scholarships, each worth USD 2,500, will be awarded

All funds will be administered by the COSECSA Secretariat

Amounts already paid to COSECSA are non-refundable
