Over 90% of people who lack access to timely, safe, and affordable surgical care live in low- and middle-income countries, including sub-Saharan Africa. The College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) is committed to addressing this inequity through specialist training and research. Since its establishment, COSECSA has trained more than 1,000 surgeons, significantly strengthening the surgical workforce across the region.
To further advance locally led research, COSECSA—supported by the Intuitive Foundation—has launched the Global Surgery Research Mentorship Program. This initiative equips trainees and fellows with the skills to become future global surgery researchers and surgeon scientists, generating high-quality evidence to inform clinical practice and policy at national, regional, and global levels.
