Our Impact

Promoting excellence in surgical care, training, and research across East, Central, and Southern Africa

Human Workforce Development

COSECSA has built the largest surgical training network in the region, producing a new generation of highly skilled and locally retained specialists. To date, 1048 surgeons have graduated, with 1,388 more currently in training. Importantly, 92% of graduates remain in their country of training, ensuring long-term sustainability and strengthening national health systems. This locally anchored workforce is directly reducing the surgical care gap across East, Central, and Southern Africa.

Trainers and Faculty

COSECSA’s success rests on its strong faculty network. With 954 dedicated trainers and 80 master trainers, supported by an established Court of Examiners, we uphold global standards of surgical education and assessment. These professionals not only impart clinical skills but also serve as mentors and role models for trainees, ensuring that excellence, ethics, and innovation remain central to our programs.

Research and Knowledge Sharing

COSECSA is committed to advancing surgical science and disseminating knowledge across Africa. The East and Central African Journal of Surgery (ECAJS) has published 64 issues, providing a platform for regional research and collaboration. Our Annual International Scientific Conference convenes surgeons, researchers, and policymakers to exchange innovations and best practices. In addition, our Institutional Review Board, registered with the US Department of Health & Human Services, provides rigorous ethical oversight for research, strengthening credibility and global partnerships.

Gender Equity

We believe diversity drives stronger health outcomes. Through deliberate efforts such as the establishment of Women in Surgery Africa (WiSA), COSECSA is empowering female surgeons to thrive in a traditionally male-dominated field. Already, 215 women have graduated as surgeons, while 24% of current trainees are female. Our mentorship, networking, and leadership initiatives are fostering gender balance in surgery and inspiring the next generation of women leaders in healthcare.
