Professor Sean Tierney Training Fellowship Grant – Applications Open (2026)

Applications are now open for the Professor Sean Tierney Training Fellowship Grant, an annual award designed to support the advancement of surgical skills and knowledge across the East, Central and Southern African region.

Named in honour of Professor Sean Tierney, who played a key role in the collaboration between College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, this prestigious grant supports one outstanding candidate each year.

The successful applicant will receive €12,000 to undertake a one-year, full-time post-qualification fellowship in a subspecialty area within Africa. The grant contributes towards stipend, travel, accommodation, COSECSA fees, and other related costs.

Eligibility

Applications are open to:

  • COSECSA trainees planning to sit the FCS exam in the year of application
  • COSECSA Fellows in good standing who completed FCS within the past two years

Applicants must:

  • Have clear fellowship objectives with academic and subspecialty focus
  • Undertake the fellowship outside their home institution
  • Plan to begin the fellowship in the year following application
